Millbrook Railway Warehouse

Date Visited: June 2010

Sitting on the old Micklehurst loop line near Heyrod and Stalybridge, this old warehouse was built by the LNWR sometime during the 1800’s. Hartshead Power Station was built across the valley in 1926, and in 1932, coal sidings for 130 12 ton wagons and a conveyor system were added. Coal was dropped into a hopper underneath the sidings and then fed onto the conveyor system which transported it over the canal and across the valley to the power station. Six coal shoots also served a small yard nearby

While the Micklehurst line was closed to traffic on the 3rd October 1966, the short section of line between Millbrook sidings and Stalybridge remained in use until the power station closed in 1979. The power station has since been demolished, however, for some reason, the warehouse and part of the conveyor remain. However, despite their size, they are well hidden by dense woodland, and in summer you can’t see them from the old trackbed until you are right next to them!
